Obedience Forgotten

“We Americans are pragmatists to the max.
We want results. And we want them yesterday.
We want them without too much pondering and too much pain….
We have developed all kinds of Christ-coated remedies that are shallow and short-lived. We are not, by and large, the deeply grounded saints that some of our forefathers were.”
~ John Piper ~
My husband and I were just talking the other evening about how we as Christians have forgotten what it is to walk in obedience. We have become too focused on our "freedom in Christ", that we have forgotten that it was Christ who said, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments" (John 14:15).

That deep grounded faith that our forefathers had, has been replaced by a surface faith. A faith that is based on taking God's word and making it apply to our lives as we see fit; rather than making our lives fit into God's word.

We have forgoten that God is the same yesterday, today and forever. He gave His chosen people laws and commandments to follow. And, while the sacrafice of Christ means our Salvation is no longer tied to the law, it does not negate our obedience to God.

this is so true... i am guilty too. Even though Christ offers unconditional love to His children, we need to show our love for Him, by walking in obedience.

My dd and I were chatting about this subject today.
I've also been praying about how far or how much I get into the whole 'politics/government' stuff. I don't want to just sit on my hands and pray it gets better.. but I don't want to loose awareness that God is in control.
Searching for direction on this so that i may walk in obedience.

Great post!

Thank you so much for sharing. Indeed, "freedom in Christ" has been a crutch that is overused and misused. Thank you for your thoughts today.

Good point!

My brother-in-law reminded me the other day that our forefathers lived life with a little bit of grace and a lot of the law -- today we live life with a ton of grace and no law. I liked that assessment.

Sure, Christ came to abolish the law, but the New Testament is still full of instructions for living. We seem to forget it when we see the word "freedom."

Thanks for being part of InOtherWords today!

You are appreciated! :-)
